Building Blues Lead Guitar Vocabulary Lesson 2

Being able to solo successfully is something most of us would love to do. Having a player like Nat Martin show you how to do it is a gift. Nat’s mastery of blues and its associated music has led him to become one of the most highly respected players in the country.

In this second lesson you’ll further develop the techniques and knowledge from lesson 1 while adding in triad and 7th arpeggios, a second solo and alternative licks.

LESSON 2  AIMS

  • Recap on 12 bar blues in A and play through the arpeggios that accompany each chord.
  • Recap ‘Notated solo 1’
  • Look at alternative licks within ‘Notated solo 2’

You will study and play through the triad and 7th arpeggios that correspond to each chord in the blues in A contained within position V / box 1 of the A minor pentatonic. We’ll look at how certain notes within these can be targeted in the case of each chord, owing to their inclusion within the A minor pentatonic scale. You will again study the picking patterns and fingerings that facilitate playing these.

You will pick up on the solo from session 1, recap and then consider an alternate version of each lick to build on your existing vocabulary. You will consider all the licks to date and determine where each one can be played within the 12 bar blues progression (the licks will be numbered for reference).

THINGS TO LOOK AT AHEAD OF TIME

A Minor Pentatonic Scale Guitar Pattern 1

Below is pattern one of the minor pentatonic scale. The numbers inside the dots indicate the fingers to be used on the frets. The red dots in the pattern refer to the root of the scale.

What’s in all three sessions?

Lesson 1You will establish the chords for a 12 bar blues progression in the key of A, where you’ll play through the chord sequence using barre chords or CAGED triads in position V around box 1 of the minor pentatonic. You will learn an initial solo, focusing on a few licks.

Lesson 2See above

Lesson 3 you’ll learn a 3rd solo plus further take away techniques that will allow you to develop your blues vocabulary. You’ll examine the minor pentatonic box 3 known as the ‘The B.B. box’ and discuss how B.B.King mixed minor and major pentatonics.

Materials

  • Lesson PDF
  • Any relevant MP3s used in the session
  • Access to a video recording of the complete live session

Buying options

• You can purchase all three lessons as one course. This is the advised option as the lessons develop on each other to give you an in-depth practice regime. It’s also cheaper at £50 for all three lessons.

• Purchase lessons individually at £20 per lesson.

Who’s this level suitable for?

The level is ideal for players who want to:

  • further their blues knowledge
  • correct/tweak existing chord and soloing skills
  • take your blues playing to new levels

As a guide you should be familiar with:

  • Fretboard knowledge – basics (E and A strings but all strings should be the target)
  • Reading TAB Yes (including basic rhythm)
  • Chords – Open and basic CAGED barres
  • Ability to change between chords smoothly and play basic melody
  • Scales – you should be comfortable with a minor pentatonic scale

Things you won’t need to know (but you should definitely not ignore them):

  • Theory – although it’s so useful to understand the essentials as it makes learning things much faster and better when playing with others
  • Reading music – this is something to strive for as a long-term project

Attending the sessions

By default, you’ll start every session with complete anonymity i.e. with your mic muted and your camera switched off. You have total control of these at your end.

You can ask questions at any time:

  • Using the online Chat facility
  • Simply unmuting your mic
  • Switching on your camera and unmuting your mic

It’s all very friendly and there isn’t such a thing as a daft question – they usually lead to deep, interesting streams of very relevant stuff!

Can’t Attend
