Learn 'Something' by The Beatles

Here we learn and explore George Harrison’s song, ‘Something’. It has an awesome chord progression with cool fill riffs and a sublime solo. This song is up there with all the great songs of The Beatles and is a should-have in anyone’s repertoire. There are so many things you can do with this song and it’s ideal for beginner and intermediate players.

What will we be covering?

‘Something’ by George Harrison is one the best Beatles’ songs ever. It’s a must-have in anyone’s repertoire. We’ll explore the entire song in terms of :

  • its simple, but really effective, lilting chord progressions using lots of standard open chords: 7, 9, maj7 and lots more (including some barre chords).
  • the various ways to strum the chords, adding in subtle bassline movements between them. Strumming patterns, legato/legado techniques and the use of dynamics to add in more colour are all covered (and maybe even some fingperpicking options).
  • the nice intro.
  • adding in the classic fill licks.
  • looking at how it cleverly modulates to another key.
  • breaking down the solo and the techniques used.

This is a superb song to have in your jamming list and if you’re a singer then you’ll  instantly have an audience singing along with you.

Who’s this session suitable for?

Beginner+ to intermediate acoustic and electric guitar players.

These sessions are layered to allow different player levels to learn and play along at the same time.

Beginner+ players will pick up the song form and strumming of the chord progressions and maybe any bassline movements between the chords i.e. more than enough for playing the complete song. Relative Beginners would also get a lot out the session but they would need to know most basic open chords.

Intermediate players will, in addition to the basic song, focus on the fill licks and solo; paying special attention to the quality of the notes, additional RH techniques and phrasing.

Whatever level you are at, you’ll have lots of takeaways to work on later.
