Country Essentials

What makes country guitar sound so distinctive? What are the components that give this music its unique voice. We explore the rhythm side of playing country.

What will we be covering?

We’ll stick to rhythm using a plectrum rather than lead playing or fingerpicking for this session. There’s a huge amount to cover and so we’ll probably limit it to:

  • I, IV, V strumming patterns with alternating bass notes.
  • Getting that driving country ‘groove’ with the strumming/picking technique.
  • Transient chords to help provide movement.
  • Sweet-sounding alternative chords to spruce up the progressions.
  • Walking bass lines and maybe a little groove/riff thrown in for good measure.
  • Using double stops and triads to great effect.
  • Introducing simple intros with the maybe the odd pedal note!

We’ll base the session around a cracking song; maybe something like:

  • ‘Love Hurts’ by Gram Parsons – lovely chords.
  • ’Lone Star’ by Nora Jones – again, really nice chords.
  • ‘I Walk the line’ by Johnny Cash – simpler but with key changes.

If you’re intending to come along, email me your preferred song and we’ll base the choice on the most popular one.

Who’s this session suitable for?

Low intermediate and above.

Ideally you’re happy strumming open, and some barre, chords with a plectrum. Don’t worry if some of the above sounds daunting – you have the video of the full session to review at your leisure as well as the PDFs and any backing tracks to help with your practice.

Materials

  • Lesson PDF.
  • Access to a Zoom recording of the live lesson.
  • Any backing tracks used in the lesson.

Home practice

The session is 60 minutes long; don’t expect to master everything during the session. The tutor will go through all the key parts, demonstrating them and discussing the associated techniques and know-how.

The real work is done by you afterwards. Armed with the materials (PDFs, backing tracks and video  recording), you’ll have all the tools to work on things at your own pace.

Booking a place and buying options

When you book you’ll have two options:

You’ll receive the joining instructions on the day. Being live, you’ll be able to put your own questions directly to the tutor during the session. Choose option 1, Live lesson and materials.

2. Maybe you’d like to attend but can’t make it on this occasion?

You can buy the materials and receive them after the session (i.e. lesson PDF(s) and access to a Zoom recording of the live session). Choose option 2, Materials only.
