Learn an iconic fingerstyle tune

Fingerstyle is wonderful technique to master. It spans most genres and covers basic fingerpicking patters over standard chords to fully-blown solo arrangements, building in melody over full and partial chords and underpinned by a bass line.  We learn the classic song Blue Moon as a solo fingerstyle piece while appreciating the underlying  essential techniques.

What will we be covering?

Fingerstyle is a should-know technique for every level of player and across most genres.

It covers a really wide subject area spanning basic fingerpicking patterns over common chords to full-blown fingerstyle arrangements which we mix a melody, chords and bass lines.

This session looks at the more intermediate end of the scale of fingerstyle by showing us how to play Rodgers and Hart’s wonderful song, Blue Moon. This is an instantly recognisable song – you can’t help but start singing along to it. Imagine accompanying a singer (or yourself) and then diving into a solo, self-contained arrangement of the piece.

The song uses some luscious chords (full and partial) and employs solid fingerpicking techniques. We’ll be led through it bar-by-bar while the techniques are both discussed and demonstrated.

This lesson follows on from our recent ‘Expand your chord vocabulary’ course where we looked at the song form, rhythm and chords for Blue Moon. You can purchase the materials for this lesson as prep this fingerstyle session. See below. See buying options below.

This is a definitely a song to have in your repertoire.

Who’s this session suitable for?

Intermediate acoustic and electric guitar players who have already tried fingerpicking.

These sessions are layered to allow different player levels to learn and play along at the same time. Whatever level you are at, you’ll have lots of takeaways to work on later.

Materials

You’ll receive any lesson PDF(s) just before the session, backing track and we’ll make a Zoom recording of the live lesson available to you afterwards.
