Grade 3 Acoustic Guitar

Guitar grades offer a structured way of learning guitar. This session goes through the Trinity Grade 3 Acoustic Guitar syllabus covering its objectives, the techniques and know-how, how they’re assessed along with a play-through of some of the performance pieces which help to pull aspects together. You’ll also learn what’s involved in taking on grades and be in a position to assess your playing level. And don’t forget picking up a few cracking tunes.  Electric guitar players will also gain lots from this session.

What we’ll be covering

Lots of us want, and often need, a structured way to learn guitar. How often do we flit from one shiny Youtube video or guitar magazine to the next?

Following a defined path can be a great way to achieve your goals and this lesson goes through the contents of the Trinity Acoustic Guitar Grade 3 syllabus. We’ll look at its objectives, the techniques, exercise and playthroughs of five accessible, lovely and varied pieces for you to practise and master. These pieces will help you to define your own playing level.

The pieces make for fantastic additional performance songs for your repertoire.

Grades run from 1 to 8 and we’ve chosen Grade 3 as a starting point for us; it’s the high-end of the beginners level and it’s absolutely relevant for electric guitar players as well.

You won’t need to purchase the formal materials from Trinity for this session but we recommend that you do consider buying the Trinity booklet for Grades 3 to 5 for Acoustic Guitar (approx £15 from Amazon); you’ll have great pieces (approx 30 pieces across grades 3 to 5 with 8 in grade 3 alone) you can find more information at:  https://resources.trinitycollege.com/general-resources/acoustic-guitar-syllabus-2020-2023?hs_amp=true

You can take on grades as purely a methodical path for learning guitar; you can also go on to take the exams to push you on further – your choice.

We won’t be covering any material covered in Grades 1 and 2 – we might make reference to them but we’ll be focused on Grade 3 only.

What level are you at? This is a major adjvantage of joining in the session. If you can play some of the Grade 3 pieces then you’re probably at the right starting point (but you could be higher); if you can’t then you might need to go back a level.

Guitar Weekends is assessing how we might support anyone going down the Grades route. Come along, find out what’s covered, pick up a few tunes along the way and explore whether this could be for you.
