Expand your chord vocabulary

You can never know too many guitar chords!

Having a comprehensive bag of chords, and different ways of playing them, at your disposal is invaluable when playing any style of music. This lesson uses the classic tune, Blue Moon, as a base for adding to our chord knowledge.

What will we be covering?

Having a full bag of guitar chords at your disposal is a massive advantage when playing any type of style or genre. In this lesson, we’ll be expanding our chord vocabulary using the wonderful classic, Blue Moon, as our reference tune.

This old song has fantastic chord progressions and uses accessible, creative voicings of some beautiful chords, which we should all know. CAGED, moveable shapes and barres all come into play. This lesson covers:

  • the song form
  • the chords and how to change between them
  • strumming groove and general feel
  • introduction to fingerpicking options

Knowing one moveable chord means we instantly have a raft of others available to us. We’ll look at standard shapes for major, minor, maj7, min7, dom7 and touch on a few altered chords to add some spice (in fact they’re essential for the whole feel of the song).

At the end of the session, we’ll offer a flavour of the fingerstyle arrangement which we’ll be looking at in detail in lesson 2 i.e. we’ll learn a full solo arrangement of Blue Moon; a song that everyone should have in their repertoire.

Who’s this session suitable for?

Beginner+ to intermediate acoustic and electric guitar players.

These sessions are layered to allow different player levels to learn and play along at the same time. Whatever level you are at, you’ll have lots of takeaways to work on later.

Materials

You’ll receive any lesson PDF(s) just before the session and we’ll make a Zoom recording of the live lesson available to you afterwards.
