Bar-by-bar: Country Blues

Soloing over a major sounding Country Blues can be a little daunting and confusing; this time we’ll be expanding exploring scale choices over a Country Blues I, IV, V to help hone these skills. Some usual suspects: follow the chords, major and major pentatonic and others. We look at what, and how, to play over each bar starting with basic approaches and moving into more challenging options – all bar-by-bar.

What will we be covering?

Using the minor pentatonic over a Blues is one thing but soloing over a major key Country Blues is a totally different ball game; it can be a little daunting and confusing – we hope to demystify it!

We’ll go through a basic Country I, IV, V pick-strum piece (in a guitar-friendly key, probably G major) and explore what tools are available to solo over it. Some of the usual suspects will undoubtedly appear: follow the chords, major and major pentatonic scales, double stops, targeting chord tones, major Blues scale, etc. Maybe even some rhythm options!

The aim is to have a complete solo under our fingers for a Country Blues-based (major scale) piece. We’ll be guided through  how to solo over it using basic tools and, for the more seasoned players, how to add in some little gems.

In summary, we look at what, and how, to play over each bar starting with basic approaches and moving into more challenging options. All bar-by-bar.
