On this course you’ll discover the proven techniques that professional songwriters use to develop ideas, shape melodies, strengthen lyrics and build songs that connect with listeners. Whether you’re starting with a single lyric, a chord progression or a catchy hook, you’ll leave with a practical toolkit to help you write with greater confidence and creativity.
Every song starts somewhere—but where?
It might begin with a life experience, a news story, a memorable chord progression, a groove you can’t get out of your head, a melody that appears from nowhere, a lyric, a poem, or simply the desire to write something for someone special.
The starting point doesn’t matter. What matters is knowing how to develop that first idea into a finished song.
Throughout the day, we’ll guide you through a practical songwriting process that you can use again and again. We’ll explore melody, lyrics, chord progressions, song structure, arrangement, rhythm, harmony, key, tempo and style, showing you how each element contributes to a compelling song. You’ll discover how to build ideas, overcome writer’s block and make creative decisions with confidence.
This is a hands-on course. You’ll learn by writing, experimenting, making mistakes and discovering what works. We’ll combine clear, practical teaching with individual and group exercises, giving you the opportunity to develop your own ideas in a supportive, creative environment.
There’ll be four teaching sessions throughout the day, with plenty of time to write, share ideas and receive feedback. We’ll introduce just enough music theory to help you understand why things work, but the emphasis is always on making music—not studying it.
None of us are Bob Dylan or Paul McCartney, but great songwriting isn’t about waiting for genius to strike. It’s about learning a process, developing your creativity and having the confidence to turn ideas into songs.

The day is divided into four practical sessions, with refreshment breaks and lunch in between.
The first three sessions combine teaching with hands-on songwriting. As new ideas and techniques are introduced, you’ll immediately put them into practice by developing your own song. We’ll explore everything from melody, lyrics and harmony to song structure, arrangement and groove, helping you shape your ideas into a complete piece of music.
The final session is all about performance and feedback. You’ll have the opportunity to share your song, receive constructive advice and hear ideas for taking it even further. We’ll then choose one song from the day and develop it into a full arrangement, demonstrating how to layer instruments and build a professional-sounding arrangement. If there is time, you’ll also get an introduction to recording in Logic Pro, giving you an insight into how today’s songwriters turn an idea into a finished demo.

The aim isn’t to make songwriting feel formulaic—it’s to give your creativity the tools it needs to flourish. You’ll learn to write songs that suit your musical style, your current playing ability and, most importantly, your own artistic voice.
This course is suitable for confident beginners and above, and is open to both acoustic and electric guitarists.
It’s not aimed at complete beginners, but if you can play most open chords, have started exploring barre chords and already have a few songs under your belt, you’ll be well prepared to get the most from the day. And don’t forget—a capocan be a great tool for making songs more accessible while you’re developing your playing.
The great thing about songwriting is that it’s not about playing the most difficult guitar parts. Whether your playing is simple or advanced, you can write songs that are personal, memorable and meaningful. This course will help you write music that suits your current ability while giving you the skills to keep growing as both a guitarist and a songwriter.

As this course caters to a small number of players it means we can be more focused and players can get more attention than on our larger hotel based courses.
This course can accommodate a maximum of 6 people. If the interest is high then we can run a second day on the Sunday. For larger groups we use our hotel locations.
The price of this course is kept to £150 for the full day which is £85 cheaper than our hotel day courses. This is due to lower running costs and students bringing their own lunch. However, the benefits of the course are that the student numbers are kept small, allowing for more student 1-1 attention. The idea is a more unique experience, something similar to a small masterclass or standard 1 – 1 lesson. We have found the sessions to be super successful with clients and a highlight amongst members.
As we are working in a residential environment it’s advised to just bring an acoustic guitar. There is no need to bring amps and electric guitars. If you would prefer an electric then please let us know when making the booking and we can discuss the option with you.
We advise driving as that is the easiest way. However if you decide to come by public transport, the closest mainline station is Purley.
If coming by car then there are two junctions off the M25 you could use, junction 6 which is the A22 and junction 7 which is the A23.
Parking is free on all surrounding roads.
Unlike our online sessions these are small group Day-Only courses at the tutors home teaching space so can only accommodate limited numbers – book early to avoid disappointment.
