RIFF MASTERY Series 1: ACDC Night

Some guitar riffs are instantly recognisable from the very first few notes. Layla, Sweet Child O’ Mine, Life in the Fast Lane, Sweet Home Alabama, Pinball Wizard, Mr Brightside, Smoke on the Water, Back in Black and countless others have become part of guitar history – and they’re fantastic fun to play.

But great riffs are also brilliant practice exercises. In this lesson the focus is ACDC’s iconic songs, ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ & ‘Highway To Hell’ .

RIFF MASTERY – AC/DC

Discover what makes AC/DC’s legendary guitar riffs work

AC/DC have created some of the most instantly recognisable guitar riffs in rock – but making those seemingly simple parts sound convincing requires great timing, articulation, dynamics and control.

In this interactive online Guitar Weekends lesson, Gary Dunn will explore the guitar techniques and rhythmic ideas behind the unmistakable Angus and Malcolm Young sound.

You’ll work through classic AC/DC-style riffs and rhythm parts, looking at how relatively simple chord shapes and lead ideas can become incredibly powerful when they’re played with the right feel, timing and attack.

This isn’t simply about learning a collection of riffs. The aim is to understand why they work and develop the rhythm, phrasing and rock-guitar vocabulary you can use throughout your own playing.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

During the session you’ll work on:

  • Classic AC/DC riffs and rhythm guitar ideas
  • The different roles of Angus and Malcolm Young
  • Combining open chords, power chords and riffs
  • Tight rock rhythm guitar
  • Using space and rests effectively
  • Accurate picking and chord attack
  • Muting and controlling unwanted strings
  • Dynamics, accents and articulation
  • Moving between rhythm parts and lead-style fills
  • Developing an authentic classic-rock feel without overplaying

COURSE MATERIALS INCLUDED

You’ll receive:

  • A PDF containing the lesson material
  • Chord, riff and rhythm examples
  • Supporting lesson materials
  • Access to the session recording so you can revisit the lesson afterwards

WHO IS THIS LESSON FOR?

This lesson is ideal for guitarists who know their basic chords and want to improve their rock rhythm playing, riff vocabulary and overall feel.

AC/DC’s guitar parts can look deceptively simple on paper. This lesson explores the details that make them sound convincing and will give you plenty of ideas to continue working on after the session.

Electric guitar recommended.

PART OF THE RIFF MASTERY SERIES

This is a standalone lesson from our Riff Mastery Online Series.

You can book this lesson individually or join us for the complete three-lesson series featuring:

Layla – Derek and the Dominos
Pinball Wizard – The Who
AC/DC – Riff Mastery

Each lesson focuses on a different aspect of great guitar playing, from layered lead and rhythm parts to acoustic rhythm and classic rock riffing.

HOW THE LIVE LESSONS WORK

Each session is a one-hour live and interactive online lesson with Gary Dunn.

Gary will teach the parts, break down difficult sections and explain the techniques involved. Because the sessions are live, you’ll also be able to ask questions and get help as the lesson progresses.

And there’s no pressure to master everything during the hour.

Afterwards, you’ll receive a recording link of the complete lesson, together with any further accompanying course materials, allowing you to pause, rewind and continue working through everything at your own pace.

WHO’S RIFF MASTERY FOR?

Riff Mastery is aimed at guitarists who already know the basics and want to build their repertoire while improving their technique through real music.

The difficulty varies between songs, so check the Difficulty Badge on each individual session for guidance. But in general lessons 1 & 2 are intermediate, but lesson 3 is Beginner plus to Intermediate.

As a general guide, you’ll benefit from being reasonably comfortable with:

  • Open chords and power chords
  • Using a plectrum
  • Basic rhythm guitar
  • Reading guitar TAB
  • Changing between chords reasonably comfortably
  • Basic lead techniques such as hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides and bends

You don’t need to be able to play everything before joining us – that’s why we’re teaching it!

Some parts will be challenging, but Gary will break them down and show you how to practise them effectively. And because you receive the complete lesson recording, you can continue working at your own pace afterwards.

Both electric and acoustic guitarists can benefit from the series, although the most appropriate guitar will depend on the particular session.

WHAT IF I CAN’T ATTEND LIVE?

You can still book the course.

Every student receives the complete recording of the live lesson and all accompanying materials, so if you can’t attend on the night – or simply want to go through something again – you can work through the session afterwards at your own pace.

This also means there’s no need to worry if Gary covers more material than you can absorb during the live hour.

Pause. Rewind. Practise. Come back to it whenever you need to.

IMPORTANT POINTS

  • You will receive the Lesson PDF just prior to it being run.
  • The lesson video will only be available after the session has run. It is usually uploaded and the link sent to students 1 to 2 days after the lesson.
  • If you don’t want to be on the live video recording keep your camera switched off.
  • If you’ve missed a course you can still purchase it as part of the group of lessons.
  • If you want to be part of the online session, please avoid booking in on the day of a course. This ensures that you’ll get the Joining Instructions in time.

BUT this shouldn’t put you off booking in as you’ll receive the full materials including the video of the complete live session.

Start slowly – if you decide to book just one session but then become interested in other sessions just buy them on the website.
