Let's talk about Songwriting (FREE)

This is a FREE online discussion about how to write a song.

It’s a conversation about the art and ‘science’ of crafting a song. Group questions are very welcome. Come and take part or just listen

What we’ll be covering

It’ll be a conversation session and provide an open Q&A about a wide range of subjects. For example some big questions might be:

  • What if you don’t write songs?
  • What makes a great song?
  • Where do you even start?
  • How do you know you’ve finished?
  • Do you really need to know lots of ‘theory’?
  • Does it matter if you’re a beginner-level player?
  • What do you actually need in your musical tool bag?
  • Can you really be taught how to write a song?
  • How to avoid creating samey, samey boring music?

This online session is a sort of prep for the main event – a day of songwriting at a venue in Surrey (Sat, 28 Oct) which will be focused on the full span of aspects of writing songs: melody, harmony rhythm, ‘the catchy bit’, feel, style, song form, lyrics (mixed in with technical stuff such as time signatures, rhythmic patterns, keys, chord options and progressions, scales available to you, fingerpicking/picking/strumming techniques etc.). All of these subjects will undoubtedly be mentioned in this FREE online session.

Who’s this session suitable for?

I’d confidently say that everyone would get lots from this session regardless of whether you write songs or not. It should open your ears to things you might not have thought about before in any real detail.

You might be at the start of your guitar journey or maybe you’re already well on your way. You could be:

  • a struggling bedroom player trying to hone a piece of music
  • a regular at a guitar club
  • doing the odd slot at the open mic night
  • performing regularly at gigs in a band

Everyone will have lightbulb moments and pick up invaluable hints and tips from our tutor.
