In My Life - Lead

Learn a unique and lovely arrangement of The Beatles’ classic, In My Life, for two guitars over two sessions. This second session covers the complete lead guitar part and ventures into embellishments and even basic improvisation.

Apparently, all the group members cited this song as one of their best; you can’t get better than that! Great melody, nice chord progressions and lovely breaks and solo; all knitted together in a fantastic arrangement for two guitars.

What we’ll be covering

This is a truly beautiful song by John Lennon – with lots of influences from George Martin.

It is a short song and has a simple melody line (accompanying its thoughtful  lyrics). The underlying  rhythm and chord progressions are beautiful. This session is all about taking the vocal melody and turning into a lead guitar part.

You’ll see from the performance video shown on this page that this version is a fingerpicking arrangement for two acoustic guitars; electric guitars will do just fine as well.

The melody (lead part) can be played with a plectrum or just fingers. We’ll play through the entire song bar-by-bar with the lesson TAB/music PDF. It’s a relatively simple melody but it involves some out of key notes to target the vocal line.

As we go we’ll discuss fretting and picking hand techniques and positions to achieve a clean, smooth and accurate sound.

Additional scales and target notes will be explored as we go to provide extra tools for further embellishment or even simple improvisation.

Who’s this session suitable for?

This online course is aimed at Late Beginner to Intermediate.

It’s really for acoustic guitars but electric guitars are fine.

This is a simple melody and, with practice, most players will be able to master it. It’s useful to have used a plectrum before but fingers-only is fine as well (check out the performance video!).
