Iconic bass riffs you can use

Learn some iconic bass riffs and be able to play them as they’re meant to be played. But we go further to find out where they come from and how you can adapt and use them elsewhere.

What we’ll be covering

In this session we’ll be learning some classic bass riffs, note for note, from artists such as Queen, Michael Jackson, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, Paul Weller and many more.

We’ll learn things note for note but with a sharp focus on the techniques needed to make these bass riffs sound the way the pros actually played them. In addition we’ll explore where these notes came from (underlying chords, scale choices, etc.) and then move onto how you can start to adjust the rhythm and tempo or add in/remove notes so that you can use them elsewhere and merge them into other songs that you play; even improvise with them.

Learn from the best artists, explore what makes these bass lines awesome and build them into your repertoire.

*Guitarists would also gain a lot from this lesson.

Who’s this session suitable for?

This online lesson is aimed at Late Beginner to Intermediate levels.

General guidance:

  • Knowing your fretboard and finding notes
  • Arpeggios for basic chords (major, minor and, ideally, dom7 and min7)
  • Pentatonic major/minor scale patterns

Materials

These online lessons include:

  • Lesson PDF(s)
  • Access to a Zoom recording of the live lessons
  • Any drum backing tracks used in the lessons

Home practice

Each session is 60 minutes long; don’t expect to master everything during the session. The tutor will go through all the key parts, demonstrating them and discussing the associated techniques and know-how.

The real work is done by you afterwards. Armed with the materials (PDFs, backing tracks and video  recording), you’ll have all the tools to work on things at your own pace.

Booking a place and buying options

When you book you’ll have two options:

  1. Attend live
  2. Buy just the materials

Buying just the materials will give you everything you’ll need but live attendance is always best as it allows you to clarify a point or ask a question while it’s hot and get an answer or some guidance there and then. It’s the interaction between the group and tutor that really makes our online lessons work and you’ll be much more confident to tackle home practice.
