Build the foundations of great fingerstyle playing and learn how to apply them to the music you love.

Fingerstyle opens up a whole new world on the guitar—whether you’re playing solo, accompanying a singer, creating instrumental arrangements or playing as part of a group.

Block 1 – The Basics focuses on the essential techniques every fingerstyle guitarist needs. Across three lessons, you’ll develop your picking-hand technique, finger independence, chord arpeggios, melody playing and the ability to combine chords and melody.

You’ll also get practical exercises to build into your daily practice and some great pieces to add to your repertoire.

Lesson 1 – Fingerstyle Fundamentals & Open Chords

• Posture, hand position and correct finger assignment (PIMA)
• Arpeggiating open chords and developing smooth chord changes
• Rhythm fingerstyle techniques

Lesson 2 – Playing Melody

• Free stroke, rest stroke, alternating fingers and legato techniques
• Essential scale patterns and transposition
• Developing efficient fretting-hand movement and fingering
• Chromatic and major-scale exercises with rhythmic variations

Lesson 3 – Putting It All Together

• Developing thumb independence with PIMA variations
• Spanish Romance – melody, arpeggios and simple barre chords
• Combining chords and melody to create a solo fingerstyle arrangement
• Here, There and Everywhere – Part 3: Solo Arrangement
• Bonus practice piece: A Borders Waltz – A.J. Moore

Who’s Block 1 For?

Block 1 is ideal for higher-beginner players upwards who want to start fingerpicking, improve existing technique or build stronger foundations before tackling more advanced fingerstyle playing.

You should ideally be comfortable with:

• Open chords and changing between them
• Basic fretboard knowledge
• Reading guitar TAB, including basic rhythm
• Some experience playing melodies

Basic barre chords and scale knowledge are useful, but not essential. You don’t need to read standard music notation or have an advanced knowledge of theory.

And because you have the complete lesson recordings, you can work through everything at your own pace and revisit more challenging sections whenever you like.
