Acoustic Blues and Beyond

A deep dive into the Blues on acoustic guitar: the ‘language’, chords, relevant scales, soloing approaches, rhythmic strumming and fingerpicking, intros, outros and turnarounds and fills. Essentially the ‘works’ but also how to extend the knowledge to other genres. This is new day-only format!

What will we be covering?

This is a special, day-only course at our tutor’s studio in London exploring the Blues.

The studio setting comprises the ‘live’ room and lounge area which make for a relaxed and intimate environment; almost a masterclass! It starts at 10am and ends at 5pm.

The number of players is limited to 8 maximum. Early bookings are recommended.

It’s a working studio and so acoustic guitars only (we’re trying to avoid cables across the floor).

We’ll be focusing on the Blues (Modern blues exponents (SRV, Eric Clapton, BB King, etc.) to old-time masters (Robert Johnson, Big Blind Bluesy, etc.) covering subject such as:

  • the Blues ‘language’
  • dominant chords and progression options
  • different song forms (12/8  bar, major/minor)
  • rhythmic strumming and fingerpicking for shuffle and straight feels
  • relevant scales you can use
  • soloing approaches,
  • intros, outros and turnarounds and fills
  • mixing licks with chords
  • building a Blues piece from the ground up
  • how to extend the knowledge to other genres e.g. Jazz, Rock
  • and much more…

You should leave with a solid grounding in playing Blues and lots of ideas for embellishing the Blues pieces you can already play.

Who’s this session suitable for?

Intermediate guitar players (acoustic guitars only).

Good guidelines include:

  • you should be able to play a 12 bar blues in Bb (i.e. using barre chords)
  • have a basic understanding of how chords are built would definitely help
  • know the major and minor pentatonic scale in at least one position
  • ideally play using a plectrum and attempted fingerpicking
  • tried some soloing (albeit just up and down the scales)

We might be able to help with Prep Sheets for some of the above.

Materials

You’ll receive photos of all relevant flip charts as well as any recordings made on the day. Some PDFs will also be produced for the sessions.
