Surfing the fretboard with Triads and Inversions

We look at how to play around the guitar neck fretboard using Triads and Inversions. Thes are generally ‘little’ chordsHere we learn and explore Pink Floyd’s wonderful ‘Money’. This is a riff-based song but it also stretches your rhythm chops as well providing a truly interesting to solo to master. It’s a great song to add into your repertoire.

What will we be covering?

Firstly some questions:

  • What are triads?
  • What are inversions?
  • Are Triads and Inversions related?
  • How can they be used to create great rhythm and lead guitar?
  • And, most importantly, is this all easy to learn and put into practice?

Triads are just three note chords. We all play particular fingerings of them when we strum our basic open chords. Inversions use the same note but the lowest sounding note isn’t the usual one. The ‘theory’ side of things is relatively straight-forward. Putting triads/inversions into practice requires knowing small chord shapes, some notes on the fretboard and some guidance as to how to knit them together.

Once cracked, you’ll be using them all of the time as part of your rhyhtm and lead playing. Move the same shapes around the fretboard to get a huge range of chords with different textures as well as frameworks for solos.

This is a big subject but we’ll keep it focused so that you walk away with some very practical things to start using immediately.
