Over two lessons we’ll be looking in detail at: song form, rhythm, chords, riffs for each chord, picking technique (double stops, string skipping, palm muting and whole lot more), intro, the complete solos and how best to play them, etc. and putting it together into a self-contained piece for you to learn on the course and to perfect at home using the wealth of materials provided. So you’ll have the tools for playing rhythm, lead or the whole thing.
It’s amazing how this three chord song can maintain your attention throughout by using a simple thread of repetitive chords but with iconic riffs interspersed and accompanied by superb solos! One of the best songs ever.
The lessons are a week apart and allow lots of time for practice; they break down as follows:
Lesson 1 – the basic song
The complete song (minus the solos) – if you’re a singer or an accompanying rhythm player then this covers everything you’ll need.
Lesson 2 – the solos
If you want to be upfront and ripping the solos then this is the lesson. You might already know most of the basic song and have maybe tried the solos but struggle with them a little – this lesson should crystalise everything for you. Actually, even if you’re not a lead player this a great lesson to try it out!
*Every option comes with its own set of materials: PDFs, backing track and videos of all key sections (as well as any in-lesson recordings we decide to put in).
What you get
Both lessons have a comprehensive, detailed set of materials:
Prep sheets: available for both lessons
Lessons: detailed, bar-by-bar PDFs
Home practice: backing tracks and videos of all examples in the PDFs.
This course is aimed squarely at intermediate level players: picking, strumming, techniques, lots open chords but some barres thrown in. An acoustic player should be fine but electric is preferred. Also, it’ll be fine to use just fingers but plectrum players would be better suited.
But low intermediate, and even beginner+, levels will pick up the basic rhythm, chords and song form. Come along and try it out – it’ll spur you on learning the whole piece.
Our Get ready for Reading Rhythm ; this covers the groove of Sweet Home Alabama and would be a great leg-up for this course. Check it out.
We hope that you’ll learn and understand everything during the course and you’ll have a week’s practice time between lessons but the main work will be done by you at home – this is where practice comes in. We always try to show how best to absorb techniques and song sections and, as importantly, how to go about actually practising correctly. The support materials are invaluable but knowing what and how to practise diligently and patiently is really important.
