Rhythm Guitar Basics

Rhythm is everything! Playing rhythm guitar is a ‘must’ to master whether you’re a rhythm, or lead, player.

It’s multi-faceted and brings in creativity as well as lock-steady rhythm. Lick, riffs, fills, substitute chords, extending progressions, playing technique all encompass the complete rhythm player.

Overview

This course skims across most of the fundamentals of playing great rhythm guitar. We’ll explore, and demonstrate, all the key aspects of playing cool, tight and creative rhythm guitar.

How can you play something that’s relatively straight-forward but make it sound awesome? It’s not always what you play but how you play it!

This is a whirlwind tour of most of the core subjects. We’ll cover them very much at overview level but with demonstrations (worry not – you’ll have the session video and lesson PDF to review at your leisure! YouTube’s slow-down facility is brilliant for taking a close look at technique and detail). These could include:

  • Open chord strumming – various ways
  • Accenting, muting, tone and attack
  • Alternating and walking bass
  • Getting a good feel
  • The importance of the ears and the drummer (or metronome)
  • Chord knowledge – colourful substitutes, extensions, progressions

The course will set you off on the path for developing the skills and knowledge in order to play accuractely and with creativity and feel. On that point …

Interested in the next level?

We have a related course, (Rhythm Guitar Essentials). This Day course expands on all of the concepts and techniques at a very practical level by applying them to a multitude of classic songs/riffs across a wide range of genres. We’ll work through songs and you’ll have them to add to your repertoire.

Course suitability

We encourage most levels of acoustic, electric guitarists to come along. Average-and-above players who have a few songs under their belt, can play most open chords and have attempted barre chords ( and be able to change between them reasonably well) should be fine for the course.

If you are a relative beginner you will have this session as a reference for what to work on and put into your practice plan. You should consider one of our Beginner courses – check out the schedule.
