Play Rhythm Guitar

Rhythm is everything! You can have the coolest licks, chords, fills, turnarounds, intros, technique, etc. BUT if you haven’t got rhythm, you’ve got nothing! We look at all types of rhythmic strumming/picking  across multiple genres. Playing in the pocket, getting the groove and locking in and playing in time with others. Lots of aspects to cover. Feel the rhythm and play it.

This course is fast and furious and incredible fun. You’ll leave it buzzing.

What we will be covering

This course is focused on the engine room of music i.e. rhythm. It’s everything – It’s instantly noticeable if you’re ‘wandering’, more so than the odd misplaced note! If you struggle with time, and keeping to it, this is the course for you.

For guitar this means focusing on the  strumming/picking hand/arm but Rhythm Guitar also includes creative chords, intermixing chords and riffs, playing loud/soft at the right times, varying the groove and lots more.

Listening is at the heart of music. As hobbyists we generally play by ourselves and our rhythm never really gets addressed or practised correctly.

At a glance

  • Understanding rhythmic notation and time signatures
  • Correct strumming and picking techniques
  • Counting in properly and ‘playing in the pocket’.
  • Being part of the rhythm section (with bass and drums)
  • Listening to whoever is holding the melody
  • Playing  with creativity (triads, barres, partial, fills, double stops, ‘cool’ chords, dynamics, etc.)
  • Introducing fingerpicking (and maybe hybrid picking)

Styles looked at will include some of the following: rock, funk, blues, folk, soul, classical, jazz and many more. We’ll use some great songs as a basis for all exercises. We’ll consider the likes of Chic, Paul Simon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stevie Wonder and many more across a diverse set of genres.

The course is a veritable ‘guitar fest’ and is suitable for most players and is based on both iconic (and some unusual) songs that you can add to your repertoire and provide you with extra tools and confidence to improve your playing. If you can play open chords and some basic barre chords then you’re good to go.

Who’s this course suitable for?

The course adopts a ‘from the ground up’ approach i.e. we start at the beginning and then gradually layer the various techniques and bits of know-how. Pretty much non-stop playing with exercises galore and lots of great songs.

Beginner-level players will learn the basics and the more intermediate-level player will take on more challenging elements. Everyone will be able to play together throughout the day.

So, it caters for most levels of acoustic, electric and bass guitarists to come along; it’s definitely not for a Beginner. Average-and-above players who have a few songs under their belt, can play most open chords and have attempted barre chords should be fine for the course.

This course provides you with a wealth of new techniques and know-how to make you a more creative and rhythmic player.
