Learn Three Little Birds

Summer looks like it’s eventually on its way!  There’s no better song to learn than Bob Marley’s classic, Three Little Birds.

We’ll look at the song form, its Reggae feel, the intro, the chords (no barre chords, just open and triads) and some licks; more than enough to deliver a great, full performance.

As an aside, we have a complete breakdown of absolutely everything! We call it the ‘Full Works‘.  See details below – this definitely for the more intermiate players. These extras take the song to different level.

What we’ll be covering

This is such a cracking song to have in your repertoire. The course covers lots of subjects that are invaluable to most other songs across multiple genres. These include:

  • Play through and analysis of the song form
  • An in-depth breakdown of Reggae rhythms
  • Close attention on the staccato, tight strumming and muting technique of the strumming hand
  • Playing chords all across the neck – no barre chords involved; open and triads only
  • We’ll look at some of the lead lines that can be interspersed in the verses

The ‘Full Works’

A while back, we ran a full two-part course covering all the parts of the song. The materials for this course are available and expand on the online course here.

  • We cover all of the piano riffs/licks/fills
  • Discuss other ways to vary the rhythm using plectrum and fingers
  • Introduce barre chords into the mix (great for muting and drive)
  • We have 26 short HD videos covering all parts of the song explaining not just what is played but how it’s played and where the notes come from.

Check out the wealth of materials below.

Who’s this session suitable for?

This online course is aimed at high Beginner to Low intermediate.

Acoustic and electric guitars are both fine.

You should be familiar with the concept of I, IV and V chords in standard keys. Beginners should be fine with open chords but intermediate levels should be able to play barre chords and be able to move between them. Knowledge of pentatonic scales would be very useful. Picking will be done using either a plectrum or fingers.

The ‘full works’ is for intermediate and above.

Materials

This online course includes:

  • Lesson PDFs (maybe including some prep sheets as well).
  • Access to a Zoom recording of the live lesson.
  • Drum backing track used in the lesson.

The ‘Full Works‘ includes the above (including live attendance if you’d like to come along) plus:

  • 26 snippet HD videos. These videos are approx. 2 mins long on average and not only explaining specific parts of the song but also the techniques used and the underlying knowledge.
  • 4 backing tracks at different tempos and one is a bespoke for the entire song

There is an option below for purchasing the online course along with the ‘Full Works‘.

Home practice

The session is 60 minutes long; don’t expect to master everything during the session. The tutor will go through all the key parts, demonstrating them and discussing the associated techniques and know-how.

Always remember

The real work is done by you afterwards. Armed with the materials (PDFs, backing tracks and video  recording), you’ll have all the tools to work on things at your own pace.
