Fingerstyle is about using your fingers rather than a plectrum (maybe a thumb pick?); this approach allows for greater intricacy and accuracy of playing. All techniques will be song-based using a variety of styles such as Folk to Jazz, Blues to Rock, Pop to Country, etc. Every note you pluck in fingerstyle is important.
Artists will include the likes of: Mark Knopfler, Chet Atkins, George Harrison plus more classical and folk orientated style players such as James Taylor and Paul Simon, maybe even touching on classical players like John Williams and jazzers such as Martin Taylor.
We’ll delve into all aspects of basic techniques from fingerpicking patterns to mixing in with your strumming accompaniment, warm-ups and practice regimes, looking at chords in a different way to suit fingerstyle, artificial harmonics and cascading rolls, thumb independence and putting it all together in solo fingerstyle playing; incorporating melody, harmony and rhythm.
As with all our courses, there’ll be non-stop playing using some great tunes throughout; this is a technique-focused course with tons of tunes and no theory.
The course is suitable for most players and you’ll certainly add to your repertoire on this one. Lots of extra tools to plop into that guitar toolbox to bolster your confidence and improve your playing. If you can play open and some basic barre chords then you’re good to go. It would be useful if you have already tried a bit of fingerpicking – not essential, just a nice-to-have.
We take things at a steady pace with lots of breaks to stretch the legs and backs and get some air into our lungs and generally have some quiet time to take in what has been taught and time to discuss it with the other hobbyists. The course is as much about having a fun, sociable weekend as it is about improving your guitar playing.
Acoustic, electric and bass guitar players of average-and-above level are fine for this course. There are no hard and fast rules about course suitability but a beginner would struggle here. Contact us if you’re not sure.
