Fingerpicking basics

We’ll look at basic fingerpicking techniques and  standard picking patterns and how you can apply them to classic songs that you might already strum.

What will we be covering?

Fingerstyle is using your fingers rather than a plectrum (maybe a thumb pick!)

Essentially, your thumb and fingers provide us with multiple ‘plectrums’ at your disposal. We’ll generally use just the thumb and 1, 2 or 3 fingers. This facility allows to use chords that we already know and make them sound sophisticated and interesting.

If you’re new to fingerpicking – with the basic techniques down and picking patterns under your belt, you’ll be motoring in no time (with lots of practice!). If you’re already a fingerpicker you’ll learn  some new patterns and finesse your technique to achieve cleaner chord changes, maybe add in some passing chords, bassline movement and get a much cleaner, sweeter sound. If you take it further then you’ll be adding in partial chords and melody lines over any bass notes i.e. solo fingerstyle. We’ll delve into:

  • The basic fingerpicking techniques
  • How chords might be simplified and so much cooler
  • Thumb independence
  • Fingerpicking patterns to mix in with your strumming
  • Some exercises based on iconic songs

Who’s this session suitable for?

Beginner+ to intermediate acoustic and electric guitar players.

These sessions are layered to allow different player levels to learn and play along at the same time.

Beginner+ players would need to know basic open chords. If you’ve tried some fingerpicking in past, this would be helpful but not essential.

Intermediate players might already have tried fingerpicking over open and barre chords.

Whatever level you are at, you’ll have lots of takeawys to work on later.

Materials

You’ll receive any lesson PDF(s) just before the session and we’ll make a Zoom recording of the live lesson available to you afterwards.

Homework

The session is 60 minutes long; don’t expect to master everything during the session. The tutor will go through all the key parts, demonstrating them and discussing the associated techniques and know-how.

The real work is done by you afterwards. Armed with the materials (PDFs and video  recording), you’ll have all the tools to work on things at your own pace.

Booking a place and buying options

When you book you’ll have two options:

1. You want to join the live Zoom session.

You’ll receive the joining instructions on the day. Being live, you’ll be able to put your own questions directly to the tutor during the session. Choose option 1, Live session and materials.

2. Maybe you’d like to attend but can’t make it on this occasion?

You can buy the materials and receive them after the session (i.e. lesson PDF(s) and access to a Zoom recording of the live session). Choose option 2, Materials only.
