In My Life - Rhythm

Learn a lovely and unique arrangement of The Beatles’ classic, In My Life, for two guitar parts over two sessions. This first session covers the rhythm guitar part.

Apparently, all the group members cited this song as one of their best; you can’t get better than that! Great melody, nice chord progressions and lovely breaks and solo; all knitted together in a fantastic arrangement for two guitars.

What we’ll be covering

This is a truly beautiful song by John Lennon – with lots of influences from George Martin.

It is a short song and has a simple melody line (accompanying its thoughtful  lyrics). The rhythm and chord progressions are beautiful; this session is all about the rhythm guitar part.

You’ll see from the performance video shown on this page that this version is a fingerpicking arrangement for two acoustic guitars; electric guitars will do just fine as well.

The harmony (rhythm and chords) can be played with a plectrum or just fingers. We’ll start off playing through a simple song chart with open chords – this is perfect for singing along to.and gradually build up to smoother-sounding embellished finger-picked chords with varied rhythms following the TAB bar-by-bar.

It’s a wonderful piece to hone your strumming and fingerpicking techniques and we’ll look at these as we move through the song.

You’ll also, as part of the materials, get some HD videos of key sections of the song’s rhythm part.

Who’s this session suitable for?

This online course is aimed at Late Beginner to Intermediate.

It’s really for acoustic guitars but electric guitars are fine.

You should be familiar with the concept of I, IV and V chords in standard keys. Beginners should be fine with open chords but intermediate levels should be able to play barre chords and be able to move between them. Some scale knowledge would be useful but we’ll following the TAB/music. Picking will predominantly be done by the fingers but a plectrum can be used and maybe even hybrid picking. Discussed in the lesson.
