Fun Day Classics (A taster)

This is a 75 mins taster session for our Saturday-Only full day course in August in Sutton (Surrey).

The session is about nailing classic riffs spanning multiple genres and then learning how they can be used elsewhere. Absolutely no theory and know-how is covered on this course; it’s all about mastering the riffs and honing the techniques to play them well. We’ll look at four iconic artists and some of their signature riffs.

What will we be covering?

This is a zero theory zone!

Great riffs make songs instantly recognisable. They are cool to know and very satisfying to play and great for jamming along.

You’ll learn the riffs by rote but it’s not just about the notes – it’s the silence in between and the way they’re played. So often on our courses, we hear, “I’m playing all the right notes but it just doesn’t sound the same as the tutor!” Left and right hand techniques feature heavily on this course.

We’ll be focusing on some diverse, classic riffs of legends spanning multiple genres. Contenders at the moment are:

  • Luther Vandross
  • The Beatles
  • Michael Jackson
  • Bob Marley
  • Fleetwood Mac

We might even look at a very simple, but very unusal tuning, to give us maximum flexibility for adding in our own improvisations along with one of the riffs.

The riffs will also cover both plectrum as well as fingers.

Learning to play the riffs is the primary objective but we also want to cover how you can start using and adapting them elsewhere for other songs.

Our full day course is running on 6 Aug in Sutton/Surrey – check it here.

Who’s this course suitable for?

Beginner+ to low intermediate  levels of acoustic, electric  guitarists

The course caters for relative beginners up to struggling intermediate players. It’s not for raw beginners.

Most players will pick up some real nuggets from this session.

Materials

You’ll receive any lesson PDF(s) just before the session and we’ll make a Zoom recording of the live lesson available to you afterwards.

Homework

Don’t expect to master everything during the session. The tutor will go through all the key parts, demonstrating them and discussing the associated techniques and know-how.

The real work is done by you afterwards. Armed with the materials (PDFs and video  recording), you’ll have all the tools to work on things at your own pace.

Booking a place and buying options

When you book you’ll have two options:

1. You want to join the live Zoom session.

You’ll receive the joining instructions on the day. Being live, you’ll be able to put your own questions directly to the tutor during the session. Choose option 1, Live session and materials.

2. Maybe you’d like to attend but can’t make it on this occasion?

You can buy the materials and receive them after the session (i.e. lesson PDF(s) and access to a Zoom recording of the live session). Choose option 2, Materials only.

These sessions are most suitable for intermediate players (i.e. maybe some barre chords, a tad of music theory/knowledge, etc.). But lightbulbs will be flashing for players of all standards as you pick up some great ideas and approaches.
