Clapton Unplugged Series (Signe)

During the summer we’ll be learning four songs from Eric Clapton’s Unplugged album – all fantastic songs to have in your repertoire: Layla, Signe, Old Love and San Francisco Bay Blues.

Here we’ll be looking at the fingerpicker’s Signe.

All materials available NOW (lots of early practice!)

What we’ll be covering

The Unplugged album relaunched Eric Clapton’s career in the early ’90s. It’s an outstanding collection of wonderful, unique songs that everyone can learn and add to their repertoire.

Each song has special qualities and we’ll be going through four of them, learning the guts of each and delving into what makes them so special. One song per week during August. This week we’re looking at SIGNE. His classic warm-up song for the concert. Great fingerpicking piece to have under your belt. Followed by:

  • Old Love  (14 Aug)
  • San Francisco Bay Blues (21 Aug)

The songs we’ve chosen showcase a wide range of techniques and approaches used by Eric Clapton:  fingerpicking, melody, driving strumming patterns, true singalongs, great grooves, classic riffs and fills, moving bass lines, instantly recognisable intros and outros, awesome solos, etc.

For those who struggle

We look to make things as simple and accessible as possible to all levels. We start with the basics (song form, chords and rhythm) and then move into intermediate territory with fills, riffs, etc.

We always cover the authentic approach to the song but to make things easier we:

  • Prepare the materials with easier options for playing certain sections.
  • Discuss ideas to adapt the TAB for economical movements
  • Explore alternative chords/partial chords in 1st position as much as possible, simplified riffs, guidance on correct technique, etc.

IMPORTANT – for this online series you can pick just this song or buy all four for a discount price – see below.

And don’t forget that you can always just buy the materials which include a Zoom recording of the complete live sessions plus the lesson PDFs and any backing tracks used. So you can’t miss out if you’re busy on one of the dates!

Who’s this session suitable for?

This series of online courses is aimed at High Beginner to Intermediate levels.

The acoustic guitar is the preferred guitar but electric guitars are fine too.

Any techniques and know-how will be demonstrated and discussed respectively as we go through the lessons. There’s lots to cover and any relevant questions will be addressed during the lesson.

General guidance includes knowing and being able to play:

  • Open chords and basic barre chords
  • Strumming and picking using a plectrum
  • Basic fingerpicking

If anything is covered that’s too challenging we can, assuming there’s enough interest, organise follow-on sessions to go through specific, troublesome subject matter.

Home practice

Each session is 60 minutes long; don’t expect to master everything during the session. The tutor will go through all the key parts, demonstrating them and discussing the associated techniques and know-how.

The real work is done by you afterwards. Armed with the materials (PDFs, backing tracks and video  recording), you’ll have all the tools to work on things at your own pace.
