Bar-by-bar

Soloing over a Blues 12 bar is incredibly enjoyable but it can be a little intimidating for the uninitiated or perhaps a bit samey-samey for the more accomplished player.  We look at what, and how, to play over each bar mixing major and minor pentatonic scales. Basic and more challenging options will be covered bar-by-bar.

What will we be covering?

The Blues is a staple for the guitar; it’s a ‘must know’ regardless of any preferred genre(s).

We’ll go through a basic 12 bar form and look at what scale(s) to use and how to solo on a bar-by-bar basis. Mixing minor/major pentatonic and Blues scales and knowing what notes to target, accent, bend up to, slide into, add vibrato to, etc.

With the basics established, we might:

  • Make simple tweaks to the 12 bar: ‘quick change’, different turnarounds, introduce some additional chords (ii, V, I) and progressions.
  • Explore expanding the basic scales and when and where to use them.

The aim is that we’ll be walked through a complete 12 bar and guided through how to solo over it using basic tools and, for the more seasoned Bluesers, how to add in some spice.

Who’s this session suitable for?

Beginner+ to intermediate acoustic and electric guitar players.

These sessions are layered to allow different player levels to learn and play along at the same time. Whatever level you are at, you’ll have lots of takeaways to work on later.

Materials

You’ll receive any lesson PDF(s) just before the session and we’ll make a Zoom recording of the live lesson available to you afterwards.

1. You want to join the live Zoom session.

You’ll receive the joining instructions on the day. Being live, you’ll be able to put your own questions directly to the tutor during the session. Choose option 1, Lesson and materials.

2. Maybe you’d like to attend but can’t make it on this occasion?

You can buy the materials and receive them after the session (i.e. lesson PDF(s) and access to a Zoom recording of the live session). Choose option 2, Materials only.
