Stairway to heaven

This online course explores the rock classic Stairway to heaven by Led Zeppelin. We take a deep dive into the song, how to play it and examines what makes it work.  The course is over four detailed lesson and is suitable for intermediate players.

Overview

This course is designed to get under the hood of one of the most famous rock tunes in history – Stairway to Heaven.

Through four online lessons we’ll take you through not only the technique of how to play it note for note, but also how and why the masterpiece works as a composition.

We’ll talk about how the tune borrows harmony from the Great American Songbook, and from the Romantic era of classical music; how it manages to blend these facets with the all-out aggression of the blues; and how the song is a fascinating breadcrumb trail of composition that you can follow to learn what Jimmy Page was thinking when he wrote the music.

We’ll talk about the gear used – and what gear you can use to get as close to the tones involved as you can, and we’ll use the song as an exciting study of technique to help you develop both your acoustic and electric guitar playing.

We’ll spend two lessons looking forensically at the acoustic content of the tune, and two looking at the electric rhythm and solo features, looking at bends, slides, control of distortion… the whole thing.

Lesson format
We try to layer these lessons so that we cover off the straight-forward elements early on and gradually build up to the more complex subjects. The bulk of each lesson is teaching (usually with a minimum number of questions taken along the way) but we dedicate the end slot for Q&A. With the lessons being online you can play along with our tutor in total privacy but unmute at any time to ask a question; if the tutor asks, and you’re so inclined, you can even turn on your video and take a one-on-one coaching session.

Follow-on materials
We’ve always recognised that the real work takes place after a course and so we provide a comprehensive set of materials for home practice; these vary from course to course and can include: additional PDFs, lesson TABs, backing tracks and snippet videos of examples/exercises used during the lesson. Over and above learning the song(s) our objective is to give you the tools to self-improve.

Course suitability
This course is for average to intermediate  acoustic and electric players (check out our FAQs’ Skill levels and suitable courses). There’s something for everyone in all our courses and the follow-on materials should help in both practising the song as well as understanding and applying any techniques and relevant theory covered.

Call us for a chat at any time
Whatever level you are, you’ll have lots of takeaways to work on later. If you’d like to go through the course please call or email.

Remember
Our courses are not only there to:

  • walk you through you how to play songs
  • demonstrate techniques
  • explain really useful theory

but to also challenge you a little and give you great things to work on in your own time. Don’t expect to nail a whole song or be able to fully use a technique or completely understand a bit of practical theory on the course; be patient and diligently work through the material at home.
