The style of BB King No.2

This session is one of our Music Corner Drop-in series with Jamie McCredie. Generally we run them weekly each Tuesday at 7.30pm and delve into a broad range of subjects relating to technique, theory, know-how, practice or something topical in the guitar world.

In this week’s session 2 we look at another classic BB King song, ‘Riding with the king’ in terms of its chords and groove and then how to link in some awesome licks.

In last week’s session 1 we explored ‘The thrill is gone’ (materials available to buy).

Overview

BB King is a Blues legend and there’s lots to learn from his style of playing.

In this second session looking at his songs and techniques we delve into a pentatonic major-based song, ‘Riding with the king‘.

We’ll establish the basics in terms of the song form, chords and rhythm and then dive straight into looking at some licks that can be incorporated into it.

Mixing licks and chords is simply cool – you’ll get to sound authentic. You’ll take away enough information for you to be able to work on  and finesse these licks so that you can add them into your improvisations.

Buying option

By the way, in session 1 we looked at a pentatonic minor-based song ‘The thrill is gone‘. Same approach to the lesson – the PDFs and Zoom recording of the session are available to purchase.

Music Corners in general

These weekly one hour sessions are designed to give us the tools to self-improve and widen our  knowledge in the following general areas: rhythm, reading music, improvising, understanding music theory, getting good tone, how to play a solo, how to play with a group, how to develop your ear, learning the rules of music through transcribing the history of a genre. Our tutor, Jamie McCredie, will share key things he has learned over years that have helped to make him the professional guitarist and musician he is today.
