Chord harmony

A melody line is generally supported by chords, rhythm and a bassline. Here we look at the richness and diversity of available chords and how to group them together in cool and unusual progressions to spice up songs.

The course focuses on the hobbyist’s favourite subject – chords. Beneath a melody line you have harmony created by chords. We look at ‘everything’ you’ve ever wanted to know about chords: how to name them, chords in any key, lovely substitutions, extensions and inversions to use, cool progressions to spice up your tunes, how to find new fingerings and much more.

We’ll look at a bit of practical theory to help explain the make-up of chords and how they can fit together; there are always any lightbulb moments on this one and the material covered is applicable for all styles from Rock to Blues, Country to Jazz.

All of the chords and progressions will be explained and demonstrated through the use of classic songs – so you’ll expand your repertoire on top of lesarning to embellish the songs you already know.

As with all our courses, there’ll be non-stop playing but  peppered with some contextual theory around why things work. It’s also about having a sociable weekend with other guitar hobbyists and having some fun is as important as the teaching and playing is important as the teaching and playing.

As with all our courses, we take things at a steady pace with lots of breaks to stretch the legs and backs and get some air into our lungs and have some quiet time to take in and discuss with the others what’s being taught.

This course will definitely expand your guitar-playing horizons as it will break you out of the usual chord syndrome and is ideal for tasteful accompaniment.

There are no hard and fast rules about course suitability and we therefore encourage most levels of guitarist to come along, mix in and have a go; though a real Beginner would struggle. Indicative guidelines about what you should ‘know’ is covered in the Course Overview. Whatever level you’re at, you’ll have lots of takeaways to work on later. In brief:

  • Playing level:     Average and above.
  • Acoustic guitar: Yes
  • Electric guitar:   Yes
  • Bass guitar:        Yes

Note: Prep sheets are available on request to course goers prior to the course.
