Improvers Weekend with Gary Dunn;
Next available w/end 2nd of November in the Southern
venue.
On
this weekend we cover the same core subjects covered on
the 'Strugglers'
weekend but with a more electric & rock flavour to it.
Basic principles of guitar playing, holding the guitar, plectrum and
tips to help you play better.
Playing chords effectively.
Playing in time and together with others.
Rhythm and specific strumming patterns and getting great grooves.
Lead playing, soloing and improvisation using pentatonic scales.
A look at Playing Techniques in particular styles e.g. Rock, Blues, Country, Jazz.
Playing in different keys and transposing between them.
How to work out and learn the chords for particular tunes or songs.
Playing in different time signatures.
Work out a piece to play within a small group and perform it.
This is a very practical hands on weekend with lots of playing.
We will work through plenty of tunes (songs and instrumentals) in varied styles such as Rock, Blues and Country.
Plenty of chances to have a jam with other like-minded players.
A chance for one struggling Bass player to join us as well.
There is a
Bass place
available on most Improvers weekends

The accommodation was wonderful. A very comfortable room
in a beautiful house in a magnificent setting. I'm so
envious of you. Food was excellent with plenty of choice
and more than enough to keep me going. I'll have to try
to lose a few pounds now!
The musical side of things was very enjoyable for me. It
must be hard for you to take such a diverse bunch of
people, some of whom you presumably know nothing about,
and make it feel like a coordinated group which is
achieving real results, but you managed that brilliantly
and I think we all came away feeling we had accomplished
something.
I really appreciated Gary's input and, as the weekend
progressed, I developed an increasing respect for him.
Despite his self-effacing manner he managed to keep a
firm grip on proceedings and instil a sense of
workmanlike discipline which enabled us to make real
progress at all times. His command of so many different
styles of playing is astonishing. He impressed me deeply
with rock then jazz, classical, country, metal, etc etc.
The main thing I shall take away from the weekend is a
collection of exercises suggested by Gary, which, I
hope, will improve my technique, particularly in the
left hand.
If you would appreciate some criticism I might say that
I feel that the guitar is an amazingly versatile
instrument and the process of just reading chord symbols
does not do it justice. If that is all you are going to
do, you might just as well play an autoharp or the left
hand of an accordion. If you can read TAB or notation
you can play whatever the greats do, without that you
are just strumming. As you can imagine, my favourite
tune of the weekend was the AC/DC song 'Back in black'
from which I learned a lot.
Many thanks for a most enjoyable weekend.
