The rhythmic style of
Django and the Gypsy jazz players.
Triad chords as used by
Django and the Gypsy players.
Substitute chords and
chord progression to give more interesting movement.
Django style
orchestrations.
An insight into big band
and general jazz orchestrations.
A chance to play and mix
with other like minded Django enthusiasts.
Acoustic guitars are best
for this course , but jazz style electric guitars with a small
amplifier are very welcome.
Likewise, a reasonable proficiency with the pick is desirable, as
the music is very much a pick style, but finger style players have
attended courses in the past.
The main requirement is a good basic knowledge of chords and the
ability to play some chord progressions - that, and a healthy need
to know more.
It is also useful to know some tunes, standards such as Misty,
Autumn Leaves, September song or any of the Django tunes to use as a
base for learning the Django style.
Just to watch and listen to
Ian play is a pleasure.
Ian will be bringing his collection of video material with rare
footage of both Django and many other Gypsy guitarists, but it will be you doing
most of the playing.
Ian is a very patient
teacher and over the weekend there will be plenty of time for both
group sessions and individual one to one tuition.
My aim is
for a totally relaxed weekend conducive to learning and enjoying yourselves without any
distraction you may get at home.
This is primarily a weekend for Django
Reinhardt fans, but players of other jazz styles
will also gain a lot of useful knowledge and ideas. In fact for any guitarist
who wants to learn more about improvisation, rhythm, chords and substitutions,
plus many "insider" tips, this weekend course will be a revelation as
well as a relaxed and enjoyable way to learn.
